Abstract
A stabilizer for inhibiting degradation of unsaturated polyesters by U.V. light consists essentially of 10-90% by weight of resorcinol monobenzoate and 90-10% of a mono- or dihydroxybenzophenone. Benzophenones specified are 2,4-, 2,21- and 4,41-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone. The amount of the stabilizer used is 0.1-10% by weight of the polyester which may be derived from (i) maleic or fumaric with or without endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic, phthalic, terephthalic or adipic acids (or anhydrides) and (ii) ethylene-, diethylene-, propylene-, or dipropylene-glycols with or without allyl alcohol. Styrene and di-tert.-butyl-hydroquinone may be added to the polyester and U.V. stabilizer, and the mixture co-polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. Specification 789,070 is referred to.
