Abstract

Aromatic linear polyesters, having a good affinity for dyestuffs, and containing the structural component: <FORM:0869964/IV (a)/1> where R and R1 are organic linakages and X is a cation forming a salt of the phosphinic acid are made by esterifying an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (or ester-forming derivative thereof) and a carboxy subsituted phosphinic acid with a diol and polycondensing the resulting diol esters; the esterification of the phosphinic acid of formula: <FORM:0869964/IV (a)/2> being effected in the presence of a halide of the cation X, (preferably an alkali or alkaline earth metal halide). Either all of the reactants may be reacted simultaneously or the two acids may be separately esterified and the two resulting esters subsequently combined and polycondensed. In an example, a product obtained by reacting dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol in the presence of zinc acetate was combined with a product obtained by reacting bis-(p-carboxyphenyl)-phosphinic acid with ethylene glycol in the presence of sodium chloride and the mixture polycondensed in the presence of antimony oxide to yield a fibre-forming polymer.
