Abstract
Graft polymers are prepared in aqueous emulsion by polymerizing a mixture of from 15 to 35 parts by weight of a vinyl cyanide and from 40 to 60 parts by weight of a vinyl aromatic compound in the presence of: (a) an aqueous latex containing 15 to 35 parts by weight of a preformed polymer containing at least 80% of a conjugated diene; (b) from 1,7 to 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of monomer mixture of a C6 to C20 alkyl mercaptan; and (c) a radical addition polymerization initiator. Vinyl cyanides and vinyl aromatic compounds specified are acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile, and styrene, vinyl toluene, p-chlorostyrene and alphamethyl styrene; also present, in an amount not greater than 10% by weight of the vinyl cyanide-vinyl aromatic mixture, may be other monomers such as acrylic and methacrylic acids and methyl methacrylate. Diene polymers specified are those of butadiene, isoprene and chloroprene, either alone or with one another or with piperylene, or in admixture with up to 20% by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl toluene or divinyl benzene. Polymerization initiators specified are heat, ultra-violet light, high-energy radiation, hydrogen peroxide persulphates, perbenzoates, peracetates, redox systems and aliphatic azo compounds. The dispersing agent used may be of the cationic, anionic or nonionic type. The resulting graft polymers are stated to possess good processing characteristics.
