Abstract
<PICT:0867736/III/1> A process for the concentration of heavy water comprises extracting D from H2 from a water decomposer by catalytic exchange with NH3, bringing the thus D-enriched NH3 into isotopic exchange with H2O, decomposing the separated NH3 to N2 and H2, returning this gas mixture to the NH3-H2 exchange and returning the D-enriched water from the NH3-H2O exchange to the water decomposition. H2 from decomposition of H2O in electrolysis cascade 2 passes in countercurrent in 4 to NH3 withdrawn from the product of synthesis plant 6 to which the H2 is fed. The NH3 is fed to exchanger 16, after removal of catalyst, e.g. potassamide, at 10 for return to the feed in 8, where it passes in countercurrent to H2O entering at 19. The NH3 then passes to decomposer 18 whence N2 and H2 is returned through 22 to exchanger 4. The enriched H2O from 16 is returned to cascade 2, where heavy water is also concentrated in the later stages. Alternatively, a portion of the NH3 from 4 may be withdrawn, after catalyst removal, to separate decomposer 12 whence N2 and H2 is returned direct to exchanger 4.
