Abstract

867,711. Fuel injection pumps. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. Sept. 3, 1957 [Sept. 29, 1956], No. 27734/57. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXXIV] The inlet chamber of a fuel injection pump is connected to the engine lubricating oil system during part of each cycle of operation. As shown in Fig. 1, a duct 12, leading from a groove 13 in the cylinder bore to the inlet chamber 5, and a duct 11 from the cylinder bore to the lubricant channel 7 are interconnected during reciprocation of the plunger 4 by a groove 14 and recess 15 in the plunger so that a small quantity of lubricant is forced into the chamber 5. In a modification the groove 14 is tapered and of varying depth so that the quantity of lubricant forced into chamber 5 varies according to the angular setting of the plunger 4 and hence the speed of the engine. In a further modification a restriction in the fuel inlet to the chamber 5 creates a greater depression therein at higher speeds whereby a larger quantity of lubricant will flow into the chamber. In another arrangement the flow of lubricant to the chamber 5 is controlled by a passage in the actuating cam-shaft of the pump, which passage connects the lubricating system to the inlet to chamber 5. The invention is for use with dual fuel injection engines ; when an engine is to be run with fuel oil the supply of lubricant to the pump is cut off. The stated object of the invention is to ensure that by increasing the lubricating oil consumption constant replenishment will prevent deterioration of the oil when running on petrol.
