Class 72 [Also in Groups XII, XIII and XVI] In an apparatus for heat treating strip or strand material the material is passed around a looping roller 40 in an oven 18 and around a looping roller 71 in a cooling tower 70, the ends of the rollers 40, 71 being carried at each end by blocks secured to an endless cable or chain 43, such that a movement of one roller in one direction causes a movement in the opposite direction of the other roller. An operator actuates a switch 77 in the circuit of a reversible motor 75 driving the cables or chains 43 to adjust the position of the roller 40, thereby controlling the temperature to which the material is heated by varying the length of material path in the oven 18.
