Abstract
An elastomer-forming composition consists essentially of (1) an acid-free organopolysiloxane having a viscosity of at least 100 cs. at 25 DEG C., an average general formula: <FORM:0867511/IV (a)/1> and being composed mainly of diorganosiloxane units, where each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical, from 0,05 to 10% of the radicals R being alkenyl radicals, and n has an average value of from 1,99 to 2,0, substantially all the molecules having terminal Si-bonded OH groups; (2) from 0,1 to 50% of an alkoxy silane of the formula R1mSi(OR11)4-m, where R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, R11 is an alkyl radical and m is 0 or 1 or an alkyl polysilicate dervied from the alkoxy silane; (3) from 0,01 to 5% of a carboxylate of a metal ranging from lead to manganese inclusive in the electromotive series of metals, the acid radicals of the salts having less than 16C atoms, and (4) from 0,01 to 5% of an organic peroxide, all percentages being by weight of the siloxane. Constituents specified are: silanes (2)-methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl and sec. amyl orthosilicates; metal salts (3)-Pb. Co and Zn naphthenates, Fe and Pb 2-ethylhexoates, Cr octoate, dibutyl tin-dibenzoate, -adipate and -dilactate and Pb sebacate; and peroxides (4)-ditertiary butyl-, benzoyl-, 2 :4-dichlorobenzoyl- and dicumyl-peroxides, which may be dispersed in liquid siloxanes. Fillers, e.g. cork, wood flour, cotton linters, organic fibres, CaCO3, TiO2, C black, diatomaceous earth, zirconium silicate and silica powders, compression set additives, pigments and oxidation inhibitors may also be added. Curing may be effected at temperatures ranging from 0 DEG to 250 DEG C. Examples are given. Uses: as potting compounds, for electrical insulation and for sealing voids.
