Abstract
866,037. Nuclear reactors. McALPINE & SONS Ltd., Sir R, and HAY, J. D. Sept. 11, 1959 [Sept. 22, 1958], No. 30271/58. Class 39(4). In a nuclear power plant the heat exchangers or boilers are located in a space between primary and secondary biological shielding walls surrounding the closed reactor space. In Fig. 1 concentric cylindrical concrete walls 1, 2 are erected on a concrete raft 3, the inner wall 1 enclosing a central chamber containing the reactor core and heat exchangers 15 being positioned in the annular space between the two walls. Pumps or blowers 14 allow coolant to be circulated from a header 9 below the central chamber through the reactor core, into the annular space between the two walls, and past the heat exchangers back to the pumps 14. The annular space may be subdivided by radial partitions (Fig. 2, not shown) so that individual heat exchangers 15 may be removed for servicing through manholes 27 whilst the remaining sets of heat exchangers remain in operation; one or more of the spaces may be left without heat exchangers and used as fuel disposal chambers or to provide maintenance facilities. The inner cylinder 1 may be of normal reinforced concrete or of prestressed concrete; the outer cylinder 2 is of pre-stressed concrete to withstand the full pressure in the structure and the annular space between the two is lined with insulation 17 to reduce temperature stresses and with a thin steel liner 18 to provide gas tightness. The thickness of the two concrete walls 1, 2 is selected to provide the required biological shielding. The roof and floor of the structure are restrained horizontally by pre-stressing around the outer ring and vertically by the use of pre-stressed rods or wires. In a modified structure, Fig. 5, which is built in a hole in the ground or in rock the outer concrete wall 2 may be thinner and of normal concrete since the surrounding ground or rock takes the outward pressure and provides biological shielding. The hole in the ground or rock may be lined with a thin steel liner 24 to provide gas tightness and the ground or rock surrounding the hole may be grouted. The pumps or blowers 14 are mounted above the roof in this construction.
