Abstract

865,856. Laminating. CHADWICK& SONS Ltd., J. Sept. 25, 1957 [Sept. 25, 1956], No. 29234/56. Class 140. [Also in Groups XV and XVI] A strip is laid transversely on a continuouslydriven web by locally arresting and subsequently accelerating the movement of the web, to render stationary a length of the web for a predetermined period, and drawing a predetermined length of the strip across the temporarily stationary length of web. As shown, the web 19 is fed continuously over the rollers 20, 15, 16 and 21. The shafts 15a and 16a of the rollers 15 and 16 are linked by the tie-bar 17, and mounted in bearing-blocks 13 and 14 (the Figure is partly exploded) which can slide in the slots 12. These rollers and tie-bar are reciprocated by the rack-and-pinion, 17a and 18, so that as they move to the left, the loop around roller 15 increases, that around roller 16 reduces and the upper part of the web 19 is stationary; as they move to the right, this upper part of the web is accelerated to twice the speed of the parts of the web before roller 20 and after roller 21. The apparatus also includes means (not shown), e.g. gripper members adapted to be moved across the web, for drawing a length of the strip 22 across the temporarily stationary part of the web, and may include scissor jaws to sever the strip and clamp members, which may be heated, to press the strip on to the web.
