Abstract

865,429. Stuffing-box substitutes. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. Jan. 9, 1958, No. 911/58. Class 122 (5). Sealing means for apparatus in which gas is supplied under pressure to a rotary member, for example, an air-actuated clutch 13, comprises rotary heat-conducting sealing-rings 38 in facial sealing contact with stationary sealing- rings 36 carried by a stationary component through which the gas passes and chambers 40 through which cooling medium is circulated to cool the seal. Compressed air is supplied through a pipe 21, passages 24, 25 and 26 in a sleeve 23 secured to a stationary member 10, a chamber 27 and a radial passage 32 in a holder 28 fixed and sealed to the sleeve 23, a chamber 33 in a rotary shell 34, and a pipe 18 to the actuating diaphragm 15 of the clutch. Carbon sealing-rings 36 carried on opposite sides of the holder 28 are urged apart by springs 37 (Fig. 3) into sealing contact with metallic sealing-rings 38, preferably of cast iron, mounted on rubber rings 39 in the shell 34 which is sealed to the sleeve 23 by packing-rings 35. Cooling oil is supplied to the chambers 40 through an inlet pipe and passages (not shown) in the sleeve 23 and returned through similar passages 45, 46, 47 to an outlet pipe 48.
