Abstract

864,916. Extrusion machines. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. Jan. 1, 1959 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 45/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XIII and XXXV] A screw extrusion-drying machine has a cylinder 16, 17 with a movable portion 37 co-operating with the screws 22, 23 to provide a clearance opening for the passage of the plastic material and has temperature sensitive means 70 connected to operating means 60 arranged to vary the clearance opening between the screws and the portion 37 in response to changes in temperature of the plastic material thus to vary the pressure and maintain constant the temperature. The means 60 may be a diaphragm motor valve operated by a temperature recorder controller 68 actuated by the means 70 which may be a thermocouple. The apparatus is particularly directed towards the drying and degassing of plastic materials and the screws have back pressure zones 31, 32 so that the liquid released from the material may flow back along the screws and escape under their shoulders 33, the gases being removed, if necessary by vacuum through a pipe 61. The cylinder 16, 17 may have passages 53-58 for differential heating of the barrel to aid the frictionally generated heat produced by the back pressure zones 31, 32.
