864,511. Treating moulds and covers. HANSBERG, F. Aug. 6, 1959 [Aug. 30, 1958 (2)], No. 26973/59. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for hardening foundry cores and moulds by gaseous or atomized reagents, e.g. CO 2 gas, comprises a vacuum-chamber in which the moulds or cores are first subjected to an underpressure and then to the hardening means, the suction cylinder for the production of the vacuum being of nearly the same, or larger aircapacity, than the vacuum chamber. The vacuum-dome 13 is vertically-movable by the piston 16, and the large-capacity suction-piston 3 is operated by a piston 4, air being extracted from the dome through a spring-loaded non- return valve 9, and ejected from the cylinder through a spring-loaded valve 11. CO 2 gas &c. may be admitted through a bore 7a or 7b. The suction-piston is of a material resistant to the hardening-medium, e.g. rubber, plastic or ceramic.
