Abstract
864,234. Discharge lamps. A.E.I. LAMP & LIGHTING CO. Ltd. Jan. 21, 1959, No. 2284/59. Class 39(1). An electrode 2, Fig. 2, for supporting a concentrated arc discharge in a device such as a Xenon filled short-arc lamp, includes a tip of slotted conical or wedge 11, the area of cross-section of the slot in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cone increasing as the distance from the tip of the cone increases. The slot extends across the tip and when viewed in plan is substantially rectangular in cross-section: The lamp includes an optional starting electrode 4, Fig. 1, designed to reduce the breakdown voltage between the electrodes 2, 3; which is arranged parallel to the electrode 2 at least'in the region of the sparking tip. The electrode 2 may be of 3% thoriated tungsten with an optional additional coating of thorium. The inner walls of the slot may be coated with: a highly emissive material. The electrodes may be supported in the wall of the envelope or on stems. The Specification contains complete details of the dimensions of the tube and its electrodes, and operating potentials. The Xe-filling may be at a pressure of 1¢ atmospheres, theoperating pressure preferably being -in the range 2-8 atmospheres. The electrode 2 may be self-heating.
