Abstract
Maleic anhydride is prepared by contacting an aqueous maleic acid solution with maleic anhydride vapour supplied from a boiling liquid body of anhydrous maleic anhydride thereby converting said maleic acid into maleic anhydride vapour, immediately condensing and separating the resulting maleic anhydride vapour from the water vapour and collecting said condensed maleic anhydride in the substantial absence of water. The maleic anhydride vapour may be supplied from the liquid body in which the product is collected and may be maintained under reflux. The maleic acid solution is preferably preheated and may contact the anhydride vapour as a spray or thin film. In a preferred embodiment the contact zone has at least 2 distinct sections, the temperature of one section being maintained below the boiling point of maleic anhydride but above that of water at the prevailing pressure, and that of the other at or slightly below the boiling point of water, the aqueous maleic acid being fed to the first section at a point intermediate therein, the water-vapour being removed from the exit end of the lower temperature section and the maleic anhydride vapour condensed in the higher temperature section. Operating pressures of 10-760 mm. Hg may be used. The aqueous maleic acid feed may contain about 5-80% by weight of maleic acid.
