Abstract
N:N-dimethyl-and-diallyl-carbanilides are prepared by reacting a compound of formula : <FORM:0853228/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or a C1-C5 alkyl group and R11 is an electron-withdrawing group, with a methyl halide, dimethyl sulphate or an allyl halide in the presence of a base. Specified electron-withdrawing groups are nitro, cyano, carboxyl, carboalkoxy, acetyl, trimethylammonium, sulphonic acid, sulphonamide and carbamide groups. In Examples : (1) 4:41-dinitrocarbanilide is slurried in acetone, potassium hydroxide added, followed by methyl iodide or dimethyl sulphate, and the mixture refluxed, filtered and crystallised to give the N:N-dimethyl-compound ; (2) as in (1) but using allyl bromide to give the N:N-diallyl-compound.
