Abstract

Butyl rubber is adhered to a highly unsaturated diolefine rubber by means of two interposed layers: a layer of brominated butyl rubber in contact with the butyl rubber and a layer of a vinylpyridine copolymer rubber in contact with the unsaturated rubber, the whole assembly being then vulcanized together. The butyl rubber is a rubbery copolymer of an iso-olefine having from 4 to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. isobutylene, with from 0,5 to 10% of a polyolefine having from 4 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. isoprene. The unsaturated rubber is a polymer of not less than 25% of a diolefine, e.g. butadiene, with or without a copolymerisable monomer, e.g. styrene, and may be a natural rubber. The brominated butyl rubber is a butyl rubber as above containing 0,5 to 10% of combined bromine. The vinylpyridine rubber is a copolymer of from 55 to 15% of a vinylpyridine, e.g. 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine or 4-vinylpyridine with 45 to 85% of a 1 : 3-diene having from 4-18 carbon atoms, e.g. butadiene. Numerous other examples of monomers from which the several layers may be prepared are listed in the Specification. All these layers are compounded for vulcanisation in known manner. The layers may be fabricated and assembled in any conventional fashion, e.g. by calendering each layer separately and then superimposing or by skimcoating one layer on to another by multiple calendering. The invention may be used to bond the layers of a pneumatic tyre. Specifications 718,768 and 733,138 are referred to.
