Abstract
Natural phosphate ores are enriched by reacting them at a temperature not above 50 DEG C. with a solution containing not more than 250 grams of phosphoric acid per litre. The acid is partly retained by the ore, and the remainder dissolves alkaline - earth metals present. The working conditions are such that the total P2O5 content of the solution which flows away from the ore is the same as that of the initial phosphoric acid solution, the P2O5 which has been lost by being retained by the ore having been replaced by P2O5 dissolved from the ore. The issuing solution, which consists of alkaline-earth-metal phosphates is treated to recover phosphoric acid, for example by adding an acid which forms insoluble salts with the alkaline-earth metals present, and the phosphoric acid is then employed to enrich further quantities of ore. In examples, the phosphate ore is arranged on a band filter, and the phosphoric acid solution is sucked through the ore and filter. Phosphoric acid is regenerated from the issuing solution by precipitating the calcium present as calcium sulphate, using sulphuric acid.
