Abstract

852,154. Preventing corrosion. METAL & PIPELINE ENDURANCE Ltd., and GERRARD, J. S. April 25, 1957 [April 25, 1956], No. 3706/56. Class 123(1) A sacrificial anode for the protection of metal structures, for example the interior of ships' hulls, from corrosion comprises a horizontally disposed bar of zinc, aluminium, magnesium or alloys thereof having a base portion 10 of square cross-section with a longitudinal, tapering rib 11 projecting from its upper surface. The anode is cast around a metal structure which, in the form shown in Fig. 1, comprises two channel section legs 14 respectively disposed near the ends of the bar with their upper ends connected by welded-on strips 15. Holes 16 are provided in the legs for securing the anode to the ship's hull &c. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the anode support consists of two tubular legs 14 having securing plates 22 at their lower ends and connected by a perforated strip 20 within the anode at their upper ends. A copper wire 23 connected to the ship's hull &c. passes up through one of the legs and is threaded through the perforations in the strip prior to the casting of the anode. The provision of the thin rib 11 causes a high initial polarising current to flow whilst the rib is being consumed, the remaining square section bar then providing the long term protective current.
