Abstract
Benzene is alkylated with a -olefines which have been prepared by the pyrolysis of a crude petroleum wax distillate fraction boiling in the range 300-600 DEG F. at 10 mm mercury pressure or a concentrate therefrom and extracting the pyrolysis product with a polar solvent showing preferential solubility for aromatic hydrocarbons. The wax is pyrolised at 500-700 DEG C. and preferably a fraction boiling in the range 150-350 DEG C. separated. This is extracted with sulphur dioxide (at temperatures outside the range -10 to 35 DEG C.), nitromethane, aqueous acetone, aqueous isopropanol, diethylene glycol or liquid ammonia. The raffinate is used to alkylate benzene conventionally, e.g. using anhydrous hydrofluoric acid and the product may be sulphonated to produce detergents.
