Abstract

850,289. Filters. COOPERS MECHANICAL JOINTS Ltd., and MITCHELL, S. P. Dec. 20, 1957 [Feb. 8, 1957], No. 4443/57. Class 46. [Also in Group XXIX] A relief valve in a filter unit consits of a seat member 15, and a movable member 18 urged by a spring 22 to the position in which a resilient seal 21 thereon closes off apertures 16 in the seat member ; and one of the members is provided with apertures 20 constituting a permanent by-pass to the valve. The invention is shown applied to an oil filter unit for a motor car engine. The filter element 5 consists of an annular pleated resin-impregnated paper member held between the seat member 15 and a plate 6 by washers 8, 9 and a compression spring 10. Normally, oil enters at 24, passes through the filter element, and flows, as shown by the arrows, through the valve by-pass apertures 20 to the engine 3. When an abnormal condition arises, e.g. when the filter becomes choked, the increase in oil pressure surrounding the element 5 acts on the valve closure member to lift it and allow the unfilterd oil to flow directly to the engine through the apertures 16.
