859,471. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 14, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 5821/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor of the kind having a moderator including a plurality of fuel channels disposed over the working area of the moderator on a lattice network is characterised in that the lattice pitch is appreciably less, at least in one direction, in the centre part of the working area than in the outer parts. The moderator may be divided into three zones, the central zone having the smallest pitch, the intermediate zone an intermediate pitch, and the outer zone the largest pitch. The moderator may be of graphite and constructed of prismatic blocks, the cross-sectional dimensions of each block being approximately equal to the lattice pitch of the zone in which the block is situated less an amount necessary to allow for Wigner growth. In an alternative arrangement the blocks in the central zone have dimensions equal to a multiple of the lattice pitch, less the clearance for Wigner growth, and have a corresponding number of fuel channels in them.
