Abstract
859,327. Making bearings and cams. MAYBACH - MOTORENBAU G.m.b.H. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1957], No. 39896/58. Class 83 (2). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] A wearing surface on a shaft, e.g. a cam face or a journal bearing surface, is produced by shaping the member from a non-hardenable basic material, such as austenitic steel, forming a groove or fillet in the raised working surface with its boundaries left intact, filling the groove or fillet with wear-resistant material as by built-up welding or spraying, and then grinding down to the lateral boundaries, this method avoiding clogging of the grinding wheel by the softer basic material. In the case of a cam, Fig. 1, an arcuate fillet 13 is formed in the working surface with the lateral portions 14 intact, while in the case of a journal bearing, Fig. 5, a shallow groove with a roughened base portion 18 and undercut sides 19 is formed for the reception of the wear-resistant material.
