Abstract
859,162. Handling radioactive materials. WILSON & PARTNERS Ltd., A.C. March 10, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 7569/58. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A manipulator for the remote handling of objects in a building or cell where radioactive conditions prevail comprises a carriage 2 movable along tracks 1 and having a trolley 10 movable along transverse tracks 11. A rotatable head 25 the trolley supports a telescopic arm 5 enclosing telescopic drive means for the operation of jaws 111 supported by the end of the arm. The carriage 2 is moved by a motor 9 driving pinions 7 meshing with racks, Fig. 2 (not shown) on the tracks 1, the trolley 10 is moved by a motor mounted thereon, Fig. 4 (not shown), driving pinions 15 meshing with racks. Fig. 3 (not shown), on the tracks 11 and the head 25 is rotated by a motor 32 driving a pinion 34 engaging a ring gear 35 secured to a circular table 26 forming part of head. The table 26 has a depending tubular portion 27 whereby it is rotatably supported by bearings 29, 30 mounted in a tubular portion 28 of the trolley 10. The arm 5 comprises three telescopic tubes 38, 39, 40, the tube 38 being secured to the tubular portion 27, the tubes 39, 40 being extended or contracted by a screw and nut mechanism, Fig. 6 (not shown), operated by a motor 36 on the table 26. Two further motors (not shown) mounted on the table 26 operate a pair of drive shafts which telescope in conjunction with the tubes 39, 40 and control the jaws 111. The six motors are all of the reversible hydraulic type, each motor requiring a pair of hydraulic fluid pipes controlled by valves at a remote position by an operator. Twelve flexible pipes 71 for the motors together with a similar common bleed line are connected to a distribution board 70 on the carriage 2, these pipes being wound out or retracted in accordance with the carriage movement. Metal pipes convey the fluid from the board 70 to the motor 9 and flexible pipes 72 supply the motor 32 and the trolley traverse motor. The supply for the three motors on the rotatable head 25 is taken through flexible pipes 83 connected to an hydraulic slip ring assembly 74 (see Group XXVIII) mounted on the head.
