Abstract
859,101. Photo-electric identifying apparatus. PATTEN CO. July 28, 1958 [Aug. 6, 1957], No. 24269/58. Class 40(3). In an apparatus for identifying an article capable of high transmission of radiations at some portions and low transmission radiations at other portions, a source of radiation is directed against the article, at least one radiation responsive cell is positioned where it is actuated by radiation transmitted through a predetermined portion only of the article and an electric circuit is connected to said cell or cells operative to associate the article with a particular class only when the radiation directed against predetermined portion or portions of the article effects said cell or cells in substantially the same way as radiation directed against corresponding portion or portions of another article known to be in the particular class. In Fig. 2 a paper currency note 53 placed on a slide tray 32 is presented to a belt feed mechanism 18 which conveys the note edgewise beneath pressure rollers 46 to a position where its leading edge engages an arm 58 of a stop switch 60 which momentarily stops an electric motor driving the belt feed mechanism 18. The note 53 is thereby positioned with respect to two groups 54, 56 of photo-cells located beneath apertures 51 in a plate 14 which supports the belts of the feed mechanism 18. A second opaque plate 48 above the belts of the feed mechanism 18 contains holes in alignment with the apertures 51 and a light source 52 directs light towards the photo-cells through the holes in the two plates 48, 14. The photo-cells 54 and the associated pairs of holes in the plates 48, 14 are located so that they are aligned with portions of poor light transmitting qualities in an acceptable note and the photo-cells 56 and the holes in the plates 48, 14 corresponding thereto are located so that they are aligned with portions of good transmitting qualities in an acceptable note. The photo-cells 54 are connected through relays 72 to normally closed switches 76 in an electric circuit and the photocells 56 are connected through relays 72 to normally open switches 78 in the same electric circuit. The electric circuit is thereby closed to place a door 62 in its note acceptance position only when all of the photo-cells 54 receive less than a predetermined amount of light and all of the photo-cells 56 receive more than a predetermined amount of light.
