Abstract

Textile fibres are lubricated during the forming thereof into yarns by treating them with an aqueous emulsion having a continuous phase of water and a dispersed phase of a textile lubricating oil containing a minor proportion of an organophilic bentonite, i.e. 0,5-25% by weight of the oil-organophilic bentonite mixture, capable of dispersing with gel formation in organic liquids. The term "organophilic bentonite" is defined as a combination of a clay having a high base-exchange capacity with an onium compound possessing a substantially hydrophobic portion, as described in Specification 664,830, and may be a compound of bentonite, e.g. octadecylammonium bentonite, dodecylammonium bentonite or dimethyldioctadecylammonium bentonite, or other clay mineral, e.g. a compound of attapulgite and triphenyl lauryl phosphonium bromide. The oil used, which is preferably a non-drying oil, may be olive, peanut, teaseed or coconut oil, which may be sulphonated, a mineral or sulphonated mineral oil or a synthetic lubricating oil, e.g. a polyalkylene glycol, or the di-2-ethylhexyl ester of adipic acid. Oils which are not sulphonated and possess only feeble self-emulsification properties may have added thereto an emulsifying agent, or a sufficient amount of a self-emulsifying oil, e.g. a sulphonated mineral oil, may be used in admixture with a feebly emusilfiable oil. The emulsion preferably contains 7-25% by volume of oil composition in the total volume of emulsion. Vegetable fibres, e.g. cotton, linen, ramie, jute, hemp and sisal, animal fibres, e.g. silk, wool, camel's hair and angora goat hair, inorganic fibres, e.g. asbestos, glass and metals, semi-synthetic fibres, e.g. rayon, alginate, soya protein and zein, and synthetic fibres, e.g. nylon, polyester and polyacrylate, may be treated.ALSO:A composition suitable for lubricating textile fibres during the forming thereof into yarns comprises an aqueous emulsion having a continuous phase of water and a dispersed phase of a textile lubricating oil containing a minor proportion of an organophilic bentonite, i.e. 0.5-25% by weight of the oil-organophilic bentonite mixture, capable of dispersing with gel formation in organic liquids. The term "organophilic bentonite" is defined as a combination of a clay having a high baseexchange capacity with an onium compound possessing a substantially hydrophobic portion, as described in Specification 664,830, and may be a compound of bentonite, e.g. octadecyl ammonium bentonite, dodecyl ammonium bentonite or dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, or other clay mineral, e.g. a compound of attapulgite and triphenyllauryl phosphonium bromide. The oil used, which is preferably a non-drying oil, may be olive, peanut, teaseed or coconut oil; which may be sulphonated, a mineral or sulphonated mineral oil or a synthetic lubricating oil, e.g. a polyalkylene glycol or the di-2-ethylhexyl ester of adipic acid. Oils which are not sulphonated and possess only feeble self-emulsification properties may have added thereto an emulsifying agent, or a sufficient amount of a selfemulsifying oil, e.g. a sulphonated mineral oil, may be used in admixture with a feebly emulsifiable oil. The emulsion preferably contains 7-25% by volume of oil composition in the total volume of emulsion.
