Abstract
858,807. Chucks. JACOBS MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 11, 1958 [April 2, 1957], No. 4419/58. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXV] A chuck-collet comprises a number of angularly-spaced rigid jaws 65, Fig. 14, and resilient means 64, Fig. 15, interconnecting the jaws to hold them in predetermined spaced relation, with their outer edges 67 engageable with a conical surface 73 in a chuck and the inner edges 66 engageable with a workpiece, said means 64 consisting of links of resilient material, e.g. synthetic rubber, joined together and mechanically interlocked. In position in the chuck, the maximum collet diameter M is slightly less than the free diameter D, and the collet is movable axially by a ring 75 to vary the diameter down to a lower limit C. Two rows of links are provided, and in a modification each pair of links may be a single moulding. Each link has a shank 28, a socket 35 and a plug 27, and may be shaped as in Fig. 2. In another arrangement, a link 48, Fig. 4, comprising a socket 35b in each end, may be used alternately with the prior links, or with links each comprising a plug at each end. Where it is desired to prevent relative turning between adjacent links and the jaw carried thereby, the socket, shank and plug may be non-circular, e.g. oval.
