[Also in Group XL(c)] In a compatible colour television transmitter two separate non-overlapping channels are provided one consisting of a carrier wave Ln modulated by luminance signals and the other consisting of a pair of carrier waves An, Cn modulated respectively by audio and colour signals. The latter signals may be the "I" and "Q" as in the N.T.S.C. system or chromaticity signals of the type R-Y and B-Y or R-Y/Y and B-Y/Y the carrier Cn being modulated in phase quadrature by the two signals. With such an arrangement, since the colour carrier is outside the band of the luminance signals, the production of a dot pattern at a receiver due to the colour carrier is prevented and additionally colour synchronization is improved since the phase-reference "burst" may occur simultaneously with the line synchronizing pulses, have the maximum amplitude of the colour signal and continue throughout the frame blanking period. If desired, the colour band may lie between the audio and luminance bands.
