Class 86 A machine for agitating solids in liquid dispensions, especially paint, has a container 11 with a centrally mounted pedestal 15 which is hollow and carried by webs 18 on interior sleeve 17 in which is journalled a shaft 22 rotatable as by a motor 23. The shaft 22 carries a detachable mixing head comprising upper and lower parts 35, 34 between which is clamped a plate 36 having sluices 37. The shaft 22 also carries a collar 29 and seal ring 32, a dependent resilient lip 33 of which embraces the annular lip 28 attached to pedestal 15. At rest and at low speeds of rotation the lips 33, 28 are in sealing contact; at high speeds, centrifugal force defaces the seal ring 32 so that the lip 33 swings outwardly, reducing the pressure and the consequent wear on parts 33, 28. Liquid entering through the passage 43 into the chamber 46 is also removed by centrifugal force through ducts as at 45 in the lower part 34 of the mixer head. Any liquid which may pass the seal ring 32 into the inner annular chamber 47 or condensers therein is deflected from the bearings by the skirt 49 and drains down inside the hollow pedestal. The pedestal and mixing head are formed with a concave surface and the junction of the sides and bottom of the container is curved, in order to promote circulation in the container and to eliminate corners which might retain solids. The apparatus may be emptied by tilting.
