Abstract
857,946. Laminated glass; laminating apparatus. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. April 14, 1958 [June 21, 1957], No. 11753/58. Addition to 829,586. Class 140. Pairs of curved glass sheets are laminated with an interlayer of plastics material such as polyvinyl butyral by supporting the sheets separately, convex faces uppermost, while supporting them on transversely spaced areas or moving them in a path, laying the plastics material on the first sheet and superimposing the second sheet, excess plastics material being then trimmed off and the sheets subjected to heat and pressure. As shown, a conveyer comprising a pair of parallel endless chains 34, travelling on rails 26 and passing around sprockets 35 on a shaft 36 driven by chain and sprocket gearing from an electric motor 13, is provided with carriages for the glass sheets, each carriage comprising a pair of slotted crossbars 92 carrying at their ends slotted longitudinal bars 104, 110 having terminal pads 120, 121, the latter having notches 122. The slots permit lateral and longitudinal adjustment of the bars according to the size of the sheets. Each carriage also carries a single central pair of slotted bars, similar to 104, 110, for supporting smaller sheets. A pair of glass sheets G is loaded on to two adjacent carriages while the latter are travelling upwardly (Fig. 1B) and are supported in the notches 122. On reaching the horizontal portion of the conveyer (Fig. 1A) the sheets are moved out of the notches 122, a sheet of plastics material is taken from a pile on a table straddling the conveyer and laid on the first sheet, the second sheet is then laid over it, the plastics sheet is edgetrimmed, and the assembly A removed. Banks of tubular lamps 140 beneath the assembly line assist accurate positioning of the sheets.
