Abstract

857,116. Vices. GITTINS, W. H. N. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 19, 1958], No. 30003/58. Class 61. In a vice having a quick release mechanism for disengaging the traversing nut from the traversing screw, the quick release mechanism comprises a release bar 18 mounted for pivotal movement about a longitudinal axis which is coincident with the axis of the screw 12, the release bar having a frictional clutch connection 21 with the screw 12 and a range of angular movement about the common axis which is limited by stops 22 which may be located on a bracket 23, on the movable jaw 11 or on the clutch collar 27. The arrangement is such that during a fractional turn of the screw 12 in the direction to open the jaws of the vice the relase bar 18 is carried round with it, engages and moves the nut clear of the screw and then is arrested by the stops 22, whereupon the clutch is caused to slip and the release bar maintains the nut disengaged and clear of the traverse screw so that the movable jaw 11 of the vice is free to be moved directly towards or away from the fixed jaw 10 of the vice. The release bar 18 has a transverse arcuate section 19 which engages a cam surface 20 on the nut 15 causing the latter to be moved away from the traverse screw 12 as the arcuate section 19 of the release bar is interposed between the confronting threaded surfaces of the screw 12 and nut 15. The clutch connection 21 comprises a pair of oppositely loaded spring balls 25 located in a lateral bore in the screw 12, this portion of the screw being encircled by the rotatable collar 27 which receives an end tongue 28 of the release bar 18, and is formed with an internal annular groove 29. A depression 30 is formed in the end tongue 28 for receiving either of the balls 25, slipping of the clutch occurring when the ball 25 is forced out of the depression 30. The movable jaw 11 is carried by parallel guide rods 13 which extend through clearance openings in the body 14 of the fixed jaw 10. In a modification the clutch is located adjacent the bracket 23.
