[Also in Group XXVI] In a nuclear reactor pressure vessel, access to the interior is effected through sealed covers. As shown, the joint between the pressure vessel and cover is closed by the sealing ring 4. Gas pressure in the direction of arrows A urges the ring against the metal surface at C and elongates the ring in the vertical direction to make contact at D. Flexibility is introduced by the recess 7. Shoulders 5, 6 fit into groove 3 ; shoulder 5 is larger than 6 to locate the seal off-centre to provide a space for the gas on the pressure side P.
