Abstract

A merry-go-round comprises at least one car carrying arm 2 pivoted to a rotatable member 1 and displaceable vertically about its pivot by a pressure fluid actuator 3 to and from which fluid is routed by valve means controllable by main and auxiliary control means operable respectively from within and from outside the car. As shown, an annulus 1 revolves about a vertical shaft 1a carrying with it a series of car carrying arms 2. Each arm 2 is supported at 9 by the rod 3a of an actuator 3 pivoted to annulus 1 and is pivoted at its end 6 to a rod 7 pivoted at 8 to the annulus. A sliding carriage 5 carried on rod 3a slides in vertical guides (not shown) so that rod 3a operates the arm vertically. Pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air, is supplied to the lower part of actuator 3 through a line 10 controlled by an electro valve 11. A branch line 12 from line 10 is connected through electro valve 13 with the atmosphere. Thus by operation of valves 11 and 13 fluid may be supplied to and allowed to escape from actuator 3. The shaft 1a carries insulated conductive rings 14, 15, 16, 17 engaged by brushes. One pole of the electricity supply is led through a brush to ring 16 which is connected through a brush to valves 11, 13 whose other terminals are connected to terminals 18, 19 in car N and to rings 15 and 14 through brushes. A contact 20 in car N is connected through a brush to ring 17 which is connected to a contact 20a which can be connected by contact 1c with the second pole 21 of the current supply. When contact 1c engages contact 20a valves 11 and 13 may be operated by the occupant of car N connecting contact 20 with contact 19 or contact 18. Rings 15 and 14 are engaged by brushes which are connected to contacts 18a and 19a which may be connected by contact 1c to the pole 21 to operate valves 13 or 11 if the passenger fails to operate a switch. Actuator 3 may be a doubleacting cylinder. Coupling strips may be provided by means of which the operator acts on the switches 1c to move the arms up and down. The arms are preferably raised and lowered, e.g. in groups. the contacts being staggered or of different lengths.
