Abstract

A process for the preparation of an electrical insulating oil comprises selectively hydrogenating a mineral oil in the presence of added hydrogen at 300 to 400 DEG C., 10 to 200 kg./sq.cm., a gas discharge rate of 50 to 5000 1./kg. oil and an oil/catalyst flow rate of 0.3 to 3 kg./1./hr. so as to remove 65 to 96% wt. of the sulphur present in the oil, and treating the hydrogenated oil with a solid adsorbent. Preferred mineral oils have a viscosity of 1 to 9 DEG E. at 20 DEG C., a sulphur content of at least 1% wt., and boil in the range 300 to 500 DEG C. The desired fraction may be obtained by hydrogenating a wide fraction and fractionally distilling subsequently. The insulating oil may have an aromatic content of 40% or more and, when the aromatic content is greater than 25%, the oil may be mixed with less aromatic fractions to improve the oxidation stability. The less aromatic fraction may be a refined mineral oil which may have been hydrogenated, solvent extracted, and treated with sulphuric acid or oleum and/or a solid absorbent. This fraction may be added to the oil treated according to the invention before or after the adsorbent treatment. The hydrogenation may be effected in the gas or liquid phase using catalysts such as oxide and sulphides of Group VI and VIII metals, e.g. cobalt and molybdenum oxides and nickel and tungsten sulphides, which may be attached to carriers such as active carbon, fuller's earth. kieselguhr, silica or alumina. Suitable adsorbents for the adsorption step are fuller's earth, bauxite and clay, which may be acidactivated. An alkaline material such as lime may be added to the adsorbent. The treatment may be effected at 50 to 100 DEG C., using 0.5 to 30% wt. of adsorbent while a current of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, is blown through the oil. Antioxidants e.g. alkyl phenols such as 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methyl phenol may be added to the insulating oils. Processes wherein the oil has a viscosity of 1 to 9 DEG E. and an aromatic content of at least 35% by weight and wherein the hydrogenated oil is treated with sulphuric acid or oleum before the adsorbent treatment are disclaimed. According to the Provisional Specification the presence of added hydrogen and the specific hydrogenation conditions are optional. Specifications 589,149, 589,150, 657,400, 657,521, 665,575, 699,455 and 796,217 are referred to.
