Class 17(1) [Also in Group XXX] A shoe making apparatus comprises two superposed endless tracks 32, 33 with a first working sector where a shoe upper is mounted on a last, a drying sector, a sole attaching sector, and a finishing sector, multi-pair carriages 35 movable along the tracks, and turnable about their centreline vertical axes, and releasable means for preventing turning of the carriages which is released as each carriage passes the first working sector. Shoes are carried on carriages 35 so that they are situated outwardly of the tracks through the first sector then the carriages are swung through 180 degrees and the shoes carried through the heating space within the tracks for one circuit of the track, and finally the carriage is again turned through 180 degrees and the shoes carried outwardly of the tracks for the remainder of the circuit while finishing operations are performed. Each carriage comprises columns 34, 34<SP>1</SP> joined by longitudinal members, cross members 37, 37<SP>1</SP>, and a platform 39 with openwork shoe carriers 40, and a turnplate 41. The latter is rotatably mounted about pivot 47 on a turnplate 46, and has rollers 45 which engage that plate. The turnplates are locked together by a pawl mechanism 50 comprising a lever 52 carried by turnplate 46 and bearing .a pin 48 which normally engages in a recess 49 in turnplate 41. At the end of the first sector a roller 54 on lever 52 engages a fixed cam surface 51 and moves downwardly to disengage pin 48. Turnplate 41, with the carriage, may then be turned, by the operator, relatively to turnplate 46, to position the shoes in the space heated by elements 60. The operator returns the turnplate 41 and the carriage, after the shoes have made one circuit of the tracks whilst within the drying zone, by again turning them through 180 degrees.
