Class 20(2) [Also in Group XXII] A cross-beam for a machine-tool is built up from parallel tubes 1 welded at their contacting- edges and to strengthening-plates 4, 5. When using two tubes, Fig. 1, one tube is slotted at A to receive the other tube, and when three or four tubes are used, each is slotted as in Fig. 2. The tubes may be strengthened by rings 3 welded therein. The beam consists of two sections joined, e.g. by flanges 6, Fig. 4, the joining-surfaces differing slightly from a rightangle so that the beam is arched at the middle and becomes straight during normal working- conditions. Guide-rails 2 are welded to the beam.
