Abstract

A porous sintered metal friction element comprising a ferrous base metal and 20-32% by weight of graphite in which the graphite consists of a mixture of powdered graphite and flake graphite containing a minimum of 16 2/3 % of each form by weight of the total graphite is formed by compacting the mixture and sintering in a non-oxidising atmosphere. The preferred composition contains 20-30% graphite and 3-10% by weight of a lubricant soft-metal which is insoluble in the ferrous base metal, for example Pb, Bi or Cd or their alloys. When Cd is not present up to 10% by weight of Cu is also present. The body may be formed by pressing and sintering, or hot pressing or the sintered iron graphite compact is impregnated with the soft metal.
