Abstract
The invention comprises a resinous reaction product of melamine, formaldehyde and a polyvinyl alcohol in which the mol. ratio of melamine to formaldehyde is 1:1 to 1:3 and the polyvinyl alcohol has a polyvinyl acetate content of 10-15% and is present in an amount between 5 and 80% based on the total solids of the melamine-formaldehyde reaction product. 0,05 Mol. to 0,3 mol. of triethanolamine is advantageously present per mol of melamine and alkaline reaction conditions should prevail. The initial reaction between the melamine and formaldehyde is carried out in aqueous medium until the product has a water tolerance of 3003000% and the polyvinyl alcohol is then added. The initial reaction may be carried out at reflex temperature and after polyvinyl alcohol addition at 70 DEG C. or above.
