Abstract
854,819. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 26, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 26204/56. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XIX] An arrangement for indicating the position of a control rod (not shown) suspended by a cable 10 wound spirally on a drum 11, comprises a lead screw 14 driven by the drum through gears 12, 13, a pin 19 on a carriage 18 engaging the screwthread so that the carriage slides in a guide rod 17 upon the drum rotation. The pitch of the screw varies continuously to compensate for the effect produced by the spiral build-up and ensures that the carriage movement is directly proportional to the control rod movement. A rack 24 in the carriage drives a Magslip type position transmitter 22 connected to a remote receiver (not shown) graduated in terms of control rod position. Limit switches 25, 26 are operated to de-energize the water driving the drum 11 at the limits of the carriage travel.
