Abstract
A composition for coating cooking utensils comprises, by weight (1) from 80 to 98% of a phenylmethyl polysiloxane resin having a total of from 1 to 1,7 hydrocarbon radicals per Si atom, (2) from 1 to 10% of a liquid phenylmethylsiloxane having from 1,99 to 2,0 hydrocarbon radicals per Si atom and containing at least 1% by weight of Si-bonded OH groups, and (3) from 1 to 10% by weight of a liquid nonhydroxylated methyl-siloxane which has at least 2,0 monovalent hydrocarbon radicals per Si atom, is incompatible with (1) and (2), has a viscosity at 25 DEG C. of not more than 1,000,000 cs. and which is not excessively volatile at temperatures below 300 DEG C. Siloxane (3) may contain some radicals other than methyl radicals, e.g. ethyl, phenyl and xenyl, and may be dimethylpolysiloxane or a copolymer of dimethyl and trimethylsiloxane units or a co-polymer of dimethylsiloxane units and other siloxane units, e.g. phenylmethyl-, diphenyl-, diethyl-, xenylmethyl-, ethylmethyl-, phemyldimethyl- and methyldiphenyl-siloxane units, or any mixture of these polymers. The compositions are made merely by mixing the ingredients, conveniently in a mutual solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene, perchloroethylene, methylene chloride or petroleum ethers. The solution is then applied to the cooking utensil, and the resin is cured by heating to a temperature, e.g. from 180 DEG to 300 DEG C. Pigments, fillers, oxidation inhibitors and curing catalysts, e.g. lead and ferric naphthenates, tin and cobalt octoates, dibutyltin diacetate, zinc 2-ethyhexoate, tetramethylammonium acetate and benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide.
