842,919. Determining the frictional properties of yarns. HOSIERY & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. July 23, 1958 [June 5, 1957], No. 17833/57. Class 106 (2). An apparatus for measuring the frictional properties of yarns and the like comprises a friction pillar 4, means to draw the yarn Y around the pillar at constant speed, means 2 for applying a predetermined tension to the yarn running to the pillar 4 and means 5 for determining the tension of the yarn running from the pillar. The initial tension of the yarn is adjusted by the controller 2 so as to balance a beam 8, as indicated by a pointer 13a. The tension is then equal to half the weight W, with which the beam is loaded. To measure the final tension, a second beam 17, carrying a pulley 19 around which the yarn runs, is balanced by the use of a variable load applied by a chain 22. The tension is then equal to half the weight W 2 , with which the beam is loaded, with the additional load applied by the chain 22. From a knowledge of the initial and final tensions, the frictional force between the yarn and the pillars 4 can be calculated.
