Abstract

Barrell finishing of articles comprises tumbling the articles with pellets of a ceramic abradant dispersed in a metal matrix and then treating the articles in a bath of a liquid that dissolves the matrix at a predetermined rate but does not appreciably dissolve the ceramic ingredient, so as to facilitate removal of pellets which have become lodged in the articles, by reduction of their size. The ceramic may be alumina, silica, kyanite, mullite or silicon carbide and the matrix metal copper, lead, iron, aluminium or alloys thereof. The pellets may be formed by compressing at 80000-100000 lbs./sq. inch and then sintering in a reducing atmosphere at 1800 DEG F. The liquid bath may contain sulphuric acid, nitric acid, chromic acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, oxalic acid, or a base. The liquid bath treatment may also be used to treat the surface of the articles, e.g. by anodizing of aluminium articles. Stainless steel articles may be dipped in nitric acid to assist in removing pellets and to improve the corrosion resistance of the articles. Magnesium articles may be dipped in hydrofluoric acid solution and then in a boiling aqueous solution of sodium dichromate.
