[Also in Group XXXIV] In a die set comprising spaced-apart plates with a polygonal pin carried by one plate and a pin guide housing carried by the other plate, pin guide segments disposed in the pin guide housing are movable about the axis of the pin for self-alignment with the sides of the pin when the pin is inserted into said housing. A square leader pin 11 on an upper die set plate, Fig. 1, carries a bearing assembly comprising four retaining-plates 40 with bearing rollers 41 secured in apertures 42 by upsets 43, Fig. 2. The bearing retainers 40 are pivotally secured together by pins 49 passing through projections 44, 46 or, alternatively, links of resilient wire may be used, the complete bearing assembly surrounding the leader pin 11 and being secured to it by the engagement of a boss 52, Fig. 5 (not shown), against a shoulder 56 on the pin. The leader pin 11 and the attached bearing assembly are received between four segmental guides 25 mounted inside a guide housing 17 attached to the lower die set plate 15, Fig. 3. The segments 25 are circumferentially biased apart by springs 30 or alternatively by rubber strips received in grooves in the segments, so that on entry of the bearing assembly, the segments may move circumferentially until the bearing faces 26, Fig. 4, are aligned with the faces of the leader pin, thus taking up slight inaccuracies in the latter. After alignment, screws 35 which fit for slight lateral adjustment in apertures 33 in the housing are tightened to draw the segments against the inner walls of the guide housing 17. The segments 25 are axially retained in the housing 17 by clips 21 or by a boss 32. Leader pins and guides of the type described may be incorporated in apparatus having relatively moving members carrying forming dies such as presses and sub-press mechanism, as disclosed in Specification 669,465.
