Abstract

841,052. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIEK VARTA N. V. June 26, 1956 [July 4, 1955], No. 19794/56. Class 53. An alkaline cell having a consumable-electrode is recharged by replacing the partially consumedelectrode by an auxiliary electrode of the same metal, charging the cell using the existing or fresh electrolyte and replacing the auxiliary electrode with a fresh-electrode after charging. The method is particularly applicable to Ni-Zn and Ag-Zn cells. If the existing electrolyte is used, the auxiliary electrode may be melted down after charging and the metal used for the production of further electrodes and if fresh electrolyte is used, the auxiliary electrode may be used several times and the old electrolyte regenerated by electrolysis to remove the dissolved zinc. Fig. 1 shows a cell having an easily removable zinc electrode 6 and a cylindrical sintered nickel electrode 3 mounted in a plastic container 1. The nickel electrode 3 is electrically connected to an iron base plate 2 and to a terminal 4 and the zinc electrode is insulated from the base plate by a plastic spacer 5. Before charging the cell is inverted, the zinc electrode is unscrewed and removed and a cup member carrying the auxiliary electrode is attached to the container end-cover 7. Fig. 2 shows a battery of similar cells in which the cell-containers 1<SP>1</SP> are united by flanges 12 to form a common casing. Conductors 14 series-connecting the cells pass through channels 15 in the flanges. The flanges 15 may be omitted and the separate containers held together by common cell covers 17 and 16. During charging the auxiliary electrodes are held in recesses formed in a single cup member. A cell having a square-sectioned container with a flat sintered nickel or silver electrode adjacent each wall and a central zinc electrode is referred to in the Specification as is cell having a pencil-type zinc electrode between flat sintered nickel or silver electrodes. An electric battery lamp incorporating three cells is also described.
