At least one longitudinal slot g is formed in one leaf b of a hinge to give the leaf sufficient lateral contractibility to allow the friction between the knuckles c, d, formed at adjacent ends of the leaves, to be varied by tightening the pivot pin e. The pin has screw-threaded engagement with part of the hinge or with a nut. Friction washers h may be inserted between the knuckles.
