Abstract

849,997. Cadmium plating baths. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1959, No. 1356/59. Class 41 A cadmium plating bath which avoids hydrogen embrittlement when plating steel is made high in cadmium metal content, low in free cyanide and contains nitrate ions e.g. by adding cadmium or sodium nitrate. Preferably also a small amount of a water-soluble amine of 3-8C. atoms is included to improve throwing power. A suitable bath contains 8-15 % cadmium metal and 20À5 % sodium cyanide which provides not more than 3 % of free cyanide, and 1 to 6¢ % of sodium nitrate. Sodium hydroxide is also present. Included in the list of amines specified are, butylamine and higher mono-amines up to octylamine, 1 : 3-diamino-butane, disoxyephedrine, pyridine and morpholine.
