Abstract

849,053. Removing deposits from furnaces. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. May 29, 1959 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37035/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 51 (1). Deposits formed by the condensation of sulphur-containing flue gases on the surfaces of an air heater for the combustion air of a furnace are removed by heating the surfaces to above 250‹ F. to drive off acid and then washing the deposits with water. The surfaces may be heated by cutting off the flow of air to be heated. The air heater should be cleaned at sufficiently short intervals that the surfaces need not be maintained at temperatures above 250‹ F. for so long that the increased corrosion caused becomes excessive.
