Abstract

848,205. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions. MORGAN, H. R. Jan. 17, 1958 [Oct. 17, 1956; Oct. 26, 1956; Nov. 20, 1956], Nos. 31624/56, 32706/56 and 35468/56. Class 108(2). A road wheel is suspended by a Watt type linkage having one cam 7 and one joint 12 sufficiently massively proportioned to resist tilting of the wheel carrier 1. Lateral movement of the wheel carrier due to vertical movement of the outer end of the corresponding drive-shaft 4 is permitted by axial sliding of the bearing 13 in the link 2. There may be roller bearings (constrained against axial movement) between the bearing 13 and the link 2 (Fig. 5, not shown). In modifications, this play is alternatively taken up at the universal joint 5 (Fig. 1, not shown), at the joint 12 (Fig. 2, not shown), or by axial movement of the journal pin 11 of the link 7 (Fig. 1, not shown). In Fig. 6, the link 7 is connected to the vehicle frame by ball-jointed or rubber hinged shackles 19, 20 to permit its lateral movement. The pivot pin 11 of the link 7 may be rigid with a laterally-extending torsion rod (Figs. 9 and 10 not shown). The link 7 on one side of the vehicle may be forwardly extending while that on the other side is laterally extending.
