Abstract

847,858. Repeater housings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 23, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1958], No. 2720/58. Class 38(1) A seal for a co-axial cable entry gland to a submarine repeater housing comprises a castellated boss 3 on metal bulkhead 2, through which the inner conductor 4, with insulation 5, passes, the boss being surrounded by a mass 7 of polythene, the outer conductor being connected to the bulkhead by copper cup 8, a rubber bell 10 surrounding the gland and containing polyisobutylene to ensure against failure of the polythene-metal bond. One end of cup 8 is soldered, at 9, to bulkhead 2, and at the other end to a member 14 to which is also soldered the outer cable conductor at 20. Screw 16 secures bell 10, member 14 and external metal washer 15 together. Polymerised, isobutylene is passed into bell 10 through passage 22 and fills the bell through holes in cup 8, a similar passage (not shown) allowing expulsion of air, both passages then being closed by closure screws sealed with O-rings.
