In a lathe, having one or more toolslides, a polygonal-shaped turret 6 is slidably mounted on a shaft 21, the axis of which is above the workspindle 7 carrying a chuck 9. The slides, which move transversely to the work-spindle, may be sliding as at 13, Fig. 3, or swivelling as at 14. During the machining-operation, the slides and the turret move along predefined relatively short paths and, on returning to the loading-position, move a relatively longer distance, corresponding to the size of the work, to allow automatic feeding and removal of the work. The shaft 21. is supported by an adjustable-bracket 5 in a pedestal 4, connected to the headstock by a cross-beam 3. The slides and turret are fed through Maltesecross arrangements 11, 12, respectively, both being mounted on the shaft 21. A cam-drum 15, controlling the movements of the turret, is located in the cross-beam 3, and a control-drum 16 operates at each working-cycle. In use, the workpieces are fed by a shoot 18 and ejected along a channel 19. The blank X, which is next in line for machining, and the piece Y, which has just been machined, are held clear of a circle D representing the swing of the tools.
