Abstract
847,266. X-ray tubes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 22, 1958 [Sept. 11, 1957], No. 28674/57. Class 39(1). An electron lens for an X-ray type analyser comprises an annular magnet assembly in which one pole is formed by the edge of a small aperture 8 in a transverse plate 4<SP>1</SP>, and the other pole is formed by a cylinder whose internal diameter D is large compared to the working distance of the specimen 7<SP>1</SP>; the latter is supported beyond the apertured plate 4<SP>1</SP> and outside the magnetic structure. The working distance is the distance between the focal point where the specimen is located, and the last working surface of the lens. In the form shown, the plate 4<SP>1</SP> has a part of reduced thickness 3 round the aperture 8. The specimen is mounted on a rotatable carrier 9 fixed to a spindle 10, and the X-rays are projected through an aperture 12. The lens is used in the apparatus described in Specification 847,264.
